  • ICQ

    Pronounced "I seek you", it is a global Internet service which allows subscribers to know when people on their contact list are on the Internet at the same time as themselves, then chat with them by typing real-time, two-way messages on their computer, or even by voice over the Net.

  • IMAP

    An acronym for Internet Message Access Protocol. IMAP is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from a local server. A simpler e-mail protocol is Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), which downloads mail to the computer and does not maintain the mail on the server.

  • IMHO

    An acronym (In My Humble Opinion) used when you are having a chat conversation.

  • Instant Message

    An instant messenger (IM) is a client which allows instant text communication between two or more people through a network such as the Internet.

  • Internet Connection Sharing

    Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is the name given by Microsoft® to a feature in newer versions of its Windows operating system for sharing a single Internet connection on one computer between other computers on the same local area network.

  • Intranet

    An internal use, private network inside an organization that uses the same kind of software which would also be found on the Internet.

  • IP Address

    Internet Protocal Address:  A unique string of numbers that identifies a computer or server on the Internet. The IP address takes the form of four numbers separated by dots, for example: 123.45.67.890

  • IP Number

    Internet Protocol Number:  An alternative name for IP address.

  • IRC

    Internet Relay Chat:  A live chat area of the Internet in which real-time conversations among two or more people take place via special software. IRC is considered another part of the technology of the Internet the same way FTP, Telnet and the Web are.

  • ISP

    Internet Service Provider:  A company that provides access to the Internet to individuals or companies. ISPs provide local dial-up access from your personal computer to their computer network and their network connects you to the Internet.
