  • Mail Controls

    A setting built into software that gives the user the flexibility to set controls to receive the kind of mails pertaining to one's interests and block out the others.

  • Mail list

    A (usually automated) system that allows people to send e-mail to one address, whereupon their message is copied and sent to all of the other subscribers to the mail list. In this way, people who have many different kinds of e-mail access can participate in discussions together.

  • Mashup

    A mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience.

  • Master Screen Name

    The first screen name that you create when you register for an AOL® account and to which the rights to perform any important actions like changing a password or the billing information, is given. You cannot delete or modify this screen name.

  • Megabyte

    A unit of computer memory storage equal to 1,024 kilobytes. It is abbreviated as MB.

  • Member Directory

    The AOL® Member Directory allows you to create your own profile or to search for people who have things in common with you. For more information, please go to AOL® keyword: Member directory.

  • Memory

    Enables a computer to store information, data and programs. The more memory your computer has, the more programs, data or information you can store.

  • Message Board

    An application that allows users to post and reply to messages from other users and review the flow of a discussion. Also known as a discussion group.

  • Meta Tag

    A special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page. It provides information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page's content.

  • MIME

    (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) -- A set of extensions to the Internet Mail standards that supports the inclusion of multimedia files, such as sound and video, in e-mail messages. To use MIME, both sender and receiver must use MIME compatible e-mail programs.

  • Mirror

    A Web site that is a replica of an already existing site, used to reduce network traffic (hits on a server) or improve the availability of the original site. Mirror sites are useful when the original site generates too much traffic for a single server to support.

  • Modem Dialup

    Short for modulator/demodulator. It is a device that can convert digital signals from a computer into analog sound signals for transmission over a telephone line, and vice versa.

  • Modem DSL or Cable

    The device that connects your PC to the Internet. Because a DSL or cable modem is designed to use high-speed lines, a DSL or cable modem can provide extremely fast access to the Internet.
